Meet the Maker

Small Hours is a Toronto-based independent leather goods brand. Every piece is designed and handmade by me, Jenny.

I'm a graphic designer who loved working with my hands, and over time I grew disillusioned with the prospect of spending my days in front of a computer. I began to explore all kinds of handicrafts. One of which was woodworking. While in a woodworking class in 2015, I was drawn to a leather-working book in the wood shop's library, The Leatherworking Handbook by Valerie Michael. With the help of this book—which I still use as a reference to this day—I started learning the process of cutting, assembling and hand-stitching, and I really enjoyed it. Combining my background in graphic design with my newly-found leatherworking skills, Small Hours was born in 2017.

Today, I design and handcraft key tags, card cases, wallets, passport sleeves, pouches, bags and other accessories in small batches from my Toronto studio. I love working with fun colours and really appreciate clean lines in design. My aim is to create items that are durable and age well, that are also bright, fun, and a pleasure to use.

Materials & Craft

I work mostly with smooth Spanish leather in a classic box-calf style. I enjoy working with this type of leather because of its smooth finish, medium temper, bright colours, and how beautifully it ages over time.

I also work with Italian vegetable-tanned leather, a traditional, slow-tanned leather known for its natural finish and rich patina/character it develops over time.

All hardware used is solid brass, paired with YKK zipper. Edges are finished with a clear coat for a clean finish that holds up to daily use. Complimentary personalization is available on most styles.
